Earthquakes in Australia usually happen where the Indo-Australian Plate collides with the Eurasian Plate. Adelaide has the highest earthquake hazard of any Australian Capital. It has experienced more medium-sized earthquakes in the past 50 years than any capital. This is because South Australia is being slowly squeezed in an east-west direction by about 0.1mm per year.
Another earthquake that happened was in Newcastle where the shock measured 5.6 on the Richter scale. The effects were felt over an area of around 200,000 square kilometres (77,000 sq miles) in the state of New South Wales, with isolated reports of movement in areas up to 800 kilometres (500 miles) from Newcastle
